Middletown Main Street Earns National Accreditation from Main Street America

Big news for our downtown: Middletown Main Street has earned national Accredited status from Main Street America - the program's highest level of recognition, and a first for our organization. The honor places downtown Middletown among an elite group of revitalization programs across the country and affirms the work happening every day along our historic Broad and Main Street corridor.

A First-Time National Honor for Middletown Main Street

On Monday, June 29, 2026, the Delaware on Main Street (DOMS) Program - part of the Delaware Division of Small Business - presented certificates of accreditation and affiliation to 17 downtown organizations on behalf of Main Street America. Fittingly, the quarterly Main Street meeting was hosted right here at Middletown Town Hall. Of the 17 communities recognized, only two earned full Accredited status for the very first time: Cornerstone West CDC in Wilmington and Middletown Main Street.

What 'Accredited' Status Means

Accredited is Main Street America's highest designation tier. To qualify, a community must demonstrate a proven track record and exceptional performance across six areas: broad-based community commitment to revitalization; inclusive leadership and organizational capacity; diversified funding and sustainable operations; strategy-driven programming; preservation-based economic development; and demonstrated impact and results. In short, it is national confirmation that downtown Middletown's revitalization is well-led, financially sound, and delivering real results.

Part of a Growing Statewide Movement

Delaware now has six nationally accredited Main Street programs, up from four in 2025 - a 50% increase in communities reaching the top tier. The momentum across the state is striking: in 2025, Delaware's Main Street programs generated more than $306.8 million in local reinvestment, helped open 104 new businesses, and supported the creation of 421 full-time and 108 part-time jobs, with volunteers contributing more than 29,000 hours. Nationally, Main Street America reports that for every $1 invested in a Main Street program, an average of $21.73 is reinvested into the downtown and its commercial corridor.

"Their tireless efforts show what's possible when engaged leaders work together to shape places that reflect the people they serve."

It is a credibility signal to local stakeholders and to city, state, and national funders that Middletown Main Street holds an established place within a nationwide movement with a 46-year track record.
