Looking for Middletown DE things to do this fall? Downtown Middletown is at its best this time of year, with crisp air along Main Street, leaves turning on the shade trees, and a calendar full of reasons to bring the whole family. From a free family festival to a costume-friendly evening crawl for grown-ups and Halloween night itself, here is a simple guide to enjoying the season in the Middletown Downtown Development District.

Family Fun Fest Kicks Off the Season

Fall on Main Street got rolling with Family Fun Fest on Saturday, October 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is a free day for visitors, planned with games, crafts, live music, face painting, a scavenger hunt, and a few surprise activities. The visitor entrance is at 19 W. Green Street, right in the heart of downtown. It is exactly the kind of day that makes Downtown Middletown feel like a small town in the best way: neighbors running into neighbors, kids comparing face paint, and families wandering over to the shops afterward.

Halloween Night in Middletown

Halloween falls on a Saturday this year. The Town of Middletown lists Halloween trick-or-treating on Halloween night, October 31, from 6 to 8 p.m., and asks that children in costume be off the streets by 9 p.m. A few easy tips for a fun night: carry a flashlight or glow stick, stick to well-lit sidewalks, and plan a meeting spot if your group splits up. Details are subject to change, so confirm with the organizer.

Want to make a day of it? Spend the afternoon downtown before the porch lights come on. Grab a bite on Main Street, browse the local shops, and let the kids show off their costumes on a stroll past the historic storefronts. Our Business Directory lists every shop, restaurant, and service in the district, so you can plan your route ahead of time.

A Costume-Friendly Night Out for Grown-Ups

Parents deserved a treat too. The CharBOOterie Crawl took over Main Street on Thursday, October 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. It was a relaxed two-hour route through downtown host stops, with charcuterie courses curated by Sweet Dreams Confections and optional wine, beer, and mocktail tastings from local and regional partners. Check-in was in front of The Everett Theatre, tickets were $35 per person, and costumes were welcome. The event was for adults 21 or older with a valid ID. Details for the next crawl will be posted on the event page when confirmed.

Between the big events, downtown is an easy, walkable fall outing any weekend. A few ideas to build your own family day:

Take in the arts. The Everett Theatre at 47 W. Main Street and the Gibby Center for the Arts at 51 W. Main Street sit just steps apart and anchor the arts on Main Street. Check their own schedules for what is on stage or on the walls this season.

Plan a party. Hosting a fall birthday or a Halloween get-together? Balloon Art by Angie on E. Main Street and Sweet Dreams Confections on Shallcross Place are both listed in our directory, and Middletown Main Street's event space rentals are available for celebrations of all sizes.

Shop small for the season ahead. Main Street's boutiques and specialty shops make it easy to pick up something unique while supporting local owners. If you cannot decide, a Downtown Gift Card keeps your spending local and makes a thoughtful thank-you for teachers, coaches, or neighbors.

Looking Ahead to the Holidays

Once the pumpkins come down, Main Street starts getting ready for the holidays. Lamp Post Decorating runs November 7 through 26, when local businesses and families dress up the lamp posts along Main Street, with community voting starting November 28. Keep an eye on the full 2026 Events calendar for what is next, and learn more about the nonprofit behind it all on our About page.

However you celebrate, we hope you will spend part of your fall in Downtown Middletown. Bring the kids, bring your costumes, and come say hello on Main Street.
